UPDATE, from OEA:
Dear OEA Members and Allies,
We have decided to postpone the Candidate Interview Forum that was scheduled for this Saturday 3/14 in order to minimize the risk of coronavirus in our community. This decision was made in accordance with The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidelines for school districts and colleges that include the restriction of meeting sizes. Please help us spread the word to all who were invited to this event.
We hope to reschedule the event for sometime in April, and will continue organizing to win the Board of Education our students deserve.
Description of Event by OEA:
Join Oakland educators, students, families, and community to hear from candidates running for the Oakland Board of Education. For too long, our schools have been abused by a school board that does not listen to the needs of students, families, educators, and staff. Our movement has the power to elect new leaders who will stand for public education.
About the Election:
In November 2020, voters in four Oakland districts (1, 3, 5, and 7) will vote to elect their school board members, representing a majority of the board. Most of our current board members were elected with money from billionaire privatizers. The Board of Education makes critical decisions that impact our schools, including:
-- Approving the district budget
-- Hiring and managing administrators
-- Charter approvals, renewals, expansions, and co-locations
-- School closures
Location: Met West High School, 314 E 10th St, Oakland
10:00 -- District 1
11:30 -- District 3
1:00 -- District 5
2:30 -- District 7
CHILDCARE: Childcare will be provided on site (first-come, first-served) by volunteers from the Bay Area Childcare Collective.
ACTION2020 will be a coalition partner and will be attending in support.
